From a cinema to a Swedish interior design brand
30 years ago, Lagerhaus opened its first store on Östra Hamngatan in Gothenburg. This is where the journey began for what is now one of Sweden’s most well-known interior design brands. Since then, the ambition has remained the same – to make design more fun, more personal and accessible to more people.

The idea behind Lagerhaus
When a warehouse full of products needed to be cleared out, a warehouse sale in Germany became the starting point for the concept. Anita Pineus brought the concept and the name to Sweden, where the first store later opened on Östra Hamngatan in Gothenburg.
A store that stood out
The former Cosmorama cinema gave the store its unique character. Wooden planks, pallets and turquoise shelving became distinctive features. When the store opened in 1996, it quickly attracted attention with a product range characterised by original design.
What remains today
The first store was more than just an interior design store. The blue colour, the Bodega glasses and our collaboration with the wrapping paper manufacturer in Alingsås, which began in 1997, are all still part of Lagerhaus today. Since 2024, all our wrapping paper has been produced in Sweden.
30 years later
In the late 1990s, Lagerhaus expanded from Gothenburg to the rest of Sweden. But the original idea has remained the same: to make Scandinavian design more playful, personal and accessible to more people.
“Lagerhaus has always dared to stand out. We want to continue doing so while developing our offering for a new generation of customers.” – Thérèse Elmquist, CEO of Lagerhaus
Check out the answer to the question everyone’s been asking!
Are we from Germany, or are we just really bad at English? It’s confusing, we know. So here it is, the long-awaited explanation: We’re from Sweden.
Lagerhaus started in Gothenburg in 1996. Inspired by a successful warehouse sale in Germany, Lagerhaus was born – a warehouse in a house. And the rest is history. Lagerhaus = a house full of (really awesome) stuff.
Celebrating 30 years in 2026
On 25 September, Lagerhaus is marking 30 years with celebrations in stores across Sweden and Norway. At the same time, the original store on Östra Hamngatan is being renovated to highlight the history of the former Cosmorama cinema. With its roots firmly in Gothenburg, Lagerhaus continues to develop its product range with original designs and a growing focus on products made in Sweden and Europe.
